Week 6

Hello everyone!

I hope that everyone had a great break and is ready to get back into learning and teaching! While I was in school, writing papers and essays was one of my favorite activities because I loved the finished product. I used to make outlines and sample sentences and have people proof read all of my papers and I loved it!
The tools from this unit were so interesting to me because they would have helped me to write more efficiently in school. Below are my favorites that were introduced this week!

1) idebate: This website allows students to select a hot debate topic and watch a video clip of the debate so they can view an example of a good debate. I would use this website for my 6th graders. I would pair them up and assign them a topic from the website and a side and have them prepare their own debates on the topics. https://idebate.org/debatabase
2) Annenberg Learner Spelling Bee: One of the cool things about this website is that it reads a story to the kids, which allows them to practice listening comprehension, and it has fill in the blanks so they can practice their spelling. I would use this site with my 3rd graders towards the end of the year to review their vocabulary and spelling. http://learner.org/interactives/spelling/
3) Wise Mapping: I am mildly obsessed with this website! This easy to use website allows you to take a topic and make a mind map to help organize your thoughts before writing a paper. This would be great for students who are learning to write short stories. I want to teach my 5th graders about fables and one of the activities I want to do with them is have them write their own. This website would allow them to write down their thoughts and outline in an organized and creative way! http://wisemapping.com
4) SMS Generator: I've come to learn that majority of my students have phones with data and texting plans. They're obsessed with being in constant communication with their friends. With that being said, this website is a wonderful tool as it allows the students to create their own text dialogue. They can be the sender and the recipient! I would use this with my 4th graders because they are constantly trying to ask for my phone number so they can add me on WhatsApp. http://www.classtools.net/SMS/
5) Little Bird Tales: This website is really cool because it allows your students to record themselves reading their own stories and allows them to share it! I think this is a tool I would use with my 5th graders who are participating in a pen pal activity with a school in Boston! https://www.littlebirdtales.com

These learning tools are wonderful resources for our student and allow them to practice independent and dependent learning!
