Week 6

Hello everyone! I hope that everyone had a great break and is ready to get back into learning and teaching! While I was in school, writing papers and essays was one of my favorite activities because I loved the finished product. I used to make outlines and sample sentences and have people proof read all of my papers and I loved it! The tools from this unit were so interesting to me because they would have helped me to write more efficiently in school. Below are my favorites that were introduced this week! 1) idebate: This website allows students to select a hot debate topic and watch a video clip of the debate so they can view an example of a good debate. I would use this website for my 6th graders. I would pair them up and assign them a topic from the website and a side and have them prepare their own debates on the topics. https://idebate.org/debatabase 2) Annenberg Learner Spelling Bee: One of the cool things about this website is that it reads a story to the kids, which a...

Yayayayayay more quizlet! My kids loved using quizlet to talk about Boston! What I found to be most interesting was how one student did his flashcards comparatively (ex: side a - Boston side b - Haifa ). They had fun learning about the differences and similarities between Haifa and Boston, especially how baseball is huge in Boston (Go Red Sox!!). For this unit, I decided to try out the word cloud generator. I absolutely love the concept of this for my third graders who are learning sight words! This week they are learning the letter H. Now that they know the letters C and H and they know the ending -at, my partner and I decided to read them The Cat In The Hat. Word cloud generator can definitely help them with sight and rhyming words since the words "cat" and "hat" are two of the most common words. I decided to limit the "number of words" section to 8 words so that it isn't too many words for the kids, but it also is a good amount to have them stud...

Week 2

While blogging isn't a new thing in technology, it's a new concept to me. I have never had a blog before, let alone followed or read many. This class is opening my eyes to connecting to others people and teachers through blogs! One of the really exciting things I realized this week was all of the features of the site quizlet! I read about it on one of the technology blogs that I started following and I decided to try it out. I used it once in college as a exam prep, but I didn't know that I could make my own flashcards or quizzes! My fifth graders just began communicating with students in a school in Boston. When I was a kid, the activity was called "the pen pal activity" and we had to write letters and mail them to our pen pal. Now the students have access to computers, tablets, and phones and it opens up a whole new world for communication between students. One of the activities I am going to do is use quizlet to create flashcards related to Boston base on t...

Week 1 (A week late)

Hello everyone!  I am so sorry that this blog post is a week late; I had some trouble registering for the course. I want to start off by introducing myself.  My name is Alicia Carter and I am about to turn 25 years old (5 days from now!). I was born in Baltimore, MD, raised in Knoxville, TN, and am now living in Haifa, Israel. My reason for joining MITF is because I am planning on making Aliyah after the program concludes (actually, the whole reason I found out about the program is because of my Aliyah interview at The Jewish Agency).  Being here is a dream come true for me. I went on Taglit when I was 18 and fell in love with everything Israel had to offer. I came back to the country when I was 22 on a P2G program based in Hadera, where I got to volunteer in a preschool for 10 days. That experience reminded me of how much I love Israel and how badly I wanted to return permanently. After the program, I returned back to Knoxville, where I graduated from the Univ...
